7. | What makes Swiss’ Omega-3 Youth products different than other children’s omega-3 products? Most other products on the market have a combination of DHA and EPA; Swiss provides only DHA because more studies demonstrate DHA has a positive effect on children and youth with regard to brain, eyes and nerve development. EPA benefits the heart and cardiovascular system, support that most adolescents do not require. |
8. | Why do youth need omega-3? DHA is present in high concentrations in the developing brain and retina, and reduced dietary consumption of this fatty acid has been observed to result in low plasma, erythrocyte, and brain lipid levels of DHA. Dietary DHA is needed for the optimum functional maturation of the retina and visual cortex, with visual acuity and mental development seemingly improved by extra DHA. |
9. | How much Omega-3 should a person take per day? Health Canada’s recommended dosage for combined EPA and DHA per day, by age group, is as follows:]
Group Age EPA & DHA (mg/day)
Minimum Maximum
Children 1-8 years 100 1500
Adolescents 9-13 years 100 2000

10. | What are EPA and DHA? EPA and DHA are omega-3 fatty acids that are present in the body.
EPA is better known for its role in heart and cardiovascular health, where as DHA is better know of its role in the development of the brain, eyes and nerves.
|
11. | Is it true that your body does not produce Omega-3? Omega-3 fatty acids are a family of unsaturated fatty acids that are required, but cannot be produced by the body. We must rely on our diet to provide the proper amounts that we need. Unfortunately most Canadians eat too much processed foods and not enough fish to get the daily recommended amount. Supplementing with fish oil is a great way to help promote heart health and aid in the development of brain, eyes, and nerves. Canadians do not get enough Omega-3 from their diet alone. Eating fish 2 to 3 times per week is ideal, as is supplementing with Omega-3 fish oils.

12. | Every multi vitamin should have minerals, but why do I need them? Minerals are nutrients that work in conjunction with vitamins and proteins to maintain your overall physical and mental well being. Minerals are present in all our tissues and maintain physiological processes necessary for the proper functioning of the nervous system, muscles, teeth, heart, hormone production, metabolism, vitamin absorption, water and tissue fluid balance. The primary sources for getting your daily minerals should be the food you eat plus a high potency multi vitamin.

14. | Does the body need CoQ10 (Co-Enzyme) supplementation and why is it important? Co-Enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a fat soluble, vitamin-line compound that is naturally present in most human cells. It is normally produced in the body; however deficiencies can occur if there is impaired CoQ10 biosynthesis due to metabolic disorders, as well as not getting enough from your diet. Since the heart and liver have high energy requirements on a daily basis, they have the highest CoQ10 concentrations. According to researchers, CoQ10 reduces the accumulation of oxidized fats in blood vessels, eases high blood pressure and regulates the rhythm of the heart. The quantity of CoQ10 present in the body decreases as a person ages, therefore supplementation in the diet is beneficial, particularly for people over the age of 50.

B vitamins are active in providing the body with energy by metabolizing fats, proteins and carbohydrates.
